WHAT VKE DOES FOR A CLIMBER

1 Fuel. 3 Jobs.

One molecule. Your brain and your muscles both burn it.

FOCUS Keep your head on the wall.

Calm, clear focus late in a session, when you’d normally start to fade.

ENERGY Power your performance.

More in the tank for the last burns of the day.

WHAT IT PROVIDES: D-BHB—the same ketone your own liver makes.

RECOVERY Tomorrow’s send starts tonight.

Better sleep after a hard day, so you wake up ready to climb again.

THE ORIGIN

Built for DARPA.

Made to keep soldiers strong and sharp when it matters most.

In 2003, DARPA’s Metabolic Dominance program went looking for a food that would hold off fatigue and keep soldiers’ physical and mental performance up through days of intense operations. It funded Dr. Richard Veech’s lab at the National Institutes of Health to build it. The result was the Veech Ketone Ester.

Same molecule. Now it’s in your pack.

HISTORICAL RESEARCH FUNDING. DARPA AND THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE DO NOT ENDORSE KETONEAID.

THE PROTOCOLS

Before. During. After. Bed.

There’s a protocol for gym sessions, big days out and sleep. Amounts for each product and goal are on the protocols page.

BEFORE

Fuel the brain before you tie in.

Take it before you warm up. It provides D-BHB rapidly, fuel for your head and your arms from the first route.

DURING

Top up between burns.

Long sessions and big days out: take more every couple of hours, depending on how hard you’re pulling. Pour it into your water bottle, or carry Ke4. It’s smaller than your protein bar.

AFTER

Right after a hard session.

Take it as soon as you’re done climbing for the day. That’s the recovery dose, and it pairs with a small amount before bed.

BED

Rest day starts at bedtime.

Take a small amount right before bed. In athletes, VKE after a strenuous day and before bed improved sleep efficiency and counteracted the drop in REM sleep.

FIRST TIME? TRY IT ON A GYM DAY, NOT ON A BIG DAY OUT. MORE ≠ BETTER.

FOR BEST RESULTS

Give it 8 weeks.

One session tells you how it feels. A training block shows you what you’re really capable of.

In trained athletes, 8 weeks of VKE after training and before bed came with about 4% more power than placebo. Train with it through a full block, not a weekend.

DIFFERENT KETONES, DIFFERENT RESULTS.

No Other Ketone Comes Close.

Every study on this page used one molecule: the Veech Ketone Ester, developed by Dr. Richard Veech and Todd King at NIH. Ketone salts, butanediol and other esters are different molecules with different research and very different focus + performance results (none that are credible). A blood ketone reading is not a result; the studies are.

R 1,3-butanediol is inebriating for most people, especially at the doses it takes to produce significant blood ketone levels. Not something you want on the wall. That’s why we use it in our own Hard Ketones alcohol alternatives, and why it never goes in your pack.

1 millimolar does not equal 1 millimolar: the same blood ketone reading from different molecules is not the same result

QUESTIONS

Ketone ester and climbing.

What will Veech Ketone Ester do for my climbing?

Veech Ketone Ester (VKE) fuels your brain and muscles with D-BHB, so you have more to work with late in a session. In human studies, it kept reaction time from slowing under mental fatigue, kept multitasking errors from rising in exhausting exercise, and improved sleep after a strenuous day. There’s no climbing trial yet; these findings concern Veech Ketone Ester and can’t be assumed for other ketone molecules.

What will Veech Ketone Ester do for my confidence?

Veech Ketone Ester supports what confidence is built on: a clear head when you’re tired. No study has measured confidence directly. Under mental fatigue, reaction time held with Ke4, and multitasking errors didn’t rise late in exhausting exercise. Feeling sharp at the crux makes it easier to commit to the move.

How does Veech Ketone Ester feel?

Veech Ketone Ester feels like calm, alert energy: clear-headed and switched on, not wired. It isn’t a stimulant, so there’s no caffeine-style buzz. Effects vary from person to person, so try it on a gym day first and learn how it feels before a big day out.

Is Veech Ketone Ester dangerous?

No. Veech Ketone Ester is a food that provides D-BHB, the same ketone your liver makes, and it has been studied for safety in healthy adults; very large amounts and/or mixing with C8 MCT oil can upset your stomach. R 1,3-butanediol (in our Hard Ketones Real Buzz No Booze.™ line or other products like Ketone-IQ) is a different story: it’s an alcohol, inebriating for most people at the doses that raise blood ketones meaningfully. Do not climb impaired.

Why do I need Veech Ketone Ester?

Because tired climbers make mistakes. Veech Ketone Ester gives you D-BHB, a fuel your body normally makes in quantity only when fasting or on a keto diet, so your brain and muscles stay fueled when you’re tired. Take it before and during long sessions, right after a hard one, and a little before bed to sleep and recover better.

When should I take Veech Ketone Ester for climbing?

Try Veech Ketone Ester on a gym day first. Then take it before you warm up, top up every couple of hours on long days at the crag (it mixes into your water bottle), take more right after a hard session, and a small amount right before bed. Amounts for each product and goal are on the protocols page.

What’s the difference between Ke4, Ke2, and Ketone Shot?

All three contain the same Veech Ketone Ester at different concentrations. Ke4 is 50% VKE: the most compact, smaller than your protein bar and the easiest to carry on the wall. Ke2 is 25%: more water, easier to drink. Ketone Shot is 8%: ready to drink, nothing to measure. Concentration alone doesn’t set how much ester you take; how much you drink does.

Can I mix Ke4 into my water bottle?

Yes. Ke4 mixes into water, so you can pour your amount into your bottle and sip it through a long session. It’s also the easiest way to take Ke4’s strong taste. Amounts for each product and goal are on the protocols page.

Do I need a keto diet to use Veech Ketone Ester?

No. Veech Ketone Ester raises blood ketones on its own, so you get the fuel without changing how you eat. It puts you in a temporary state of ketosis while you keep your normal carbohydrates. You don’t need a ketogenic diet to use it, and it isn’t a replacement for one.

Does Veech Ketone Ester contain caffeine?

No. Veech Ketone Ester contains no caffeine, and caffeine isn’t part of the KetoneAid protocol. One study of this ester included a separate arm with caffeine added, which is why caffeine appears in our research summaries. If you also use caffeine, read the label of anything you combine and start with less than usual.

Is ketone ester allowed in competition climbing?

Veech Ketone Ester (VKE) is not listed on the current WADA Prohibited List, and all KetoneAid products are third-party batch tested for WADA-prohibited substances. Competition climbing follows the WADA Code, so check the current rules for your federation or event before you use anything, and keep your batch documentation.

What if I don’t feel a difference with VKE?

Follow our protocols. If you don’t feel it, reach out and we’ll help you hone in on how to use it for your specific case. If you’re still not satisfied we offer a money-back guarantee.

Will Veech Ketone Ester help me recover after climbing?

Yes. Some of the world’s most elite endurance Tour de France athletes use it primarily for recovery. KetoneAid sponsors 2 teams with product, not cash, because they actually use it. In athletes, VKE after a strenuous day and before bed also improved sleep efficiency and counteracted the drop in REM sleep.

What’s actually been measured.

No VKE study has tested climbing. These are the human studies of Veech Ketone Ester that the claims above lean on. Protocol, result, why it matters, and where it stops.

Under mental fatigue, the placebo group slowed 9%. The Ke4 group didn’t slow down.

PROTOCOL · WHAT HAPPENED · WHY IT MATTERS · CONTEXT

ROCA ET AL. 2026
J STRENGTH COND RES
PMID: 42429835 · FOCUS

PROTOCOL

  • 25 healthy adults (20 men, 5 women), double-blind randomized crossover.
  • Three arms: Ke4, placebo, Ke4 with caffeine.
  • Cognitive battery (task-switching, Stroop) before and after a 20-minute mental-fatigue task.
  • Ke4 dose scaled to body weight.

WHAT HAPPENED

  • Task-switching reaction time, group means before → after: placebo 956 → 1,041 ms; Ke4 957 → 922 ms; Ke4 + caffeine 993 → 864 ms.
  • Ke4 vs placebo favoured Ke4. Ke4’s own before-to-after change was not statistically significant.
  • Perceived fatigue roughly doubled in all arms.

WHY IT MATTERS

  • Climbing asks for decisions while you’re tired and pumped, move after move. This is a direct measure of staying quick while mentally tired.
  • The molecule in the study is the molecule in the bottle.

CONTEXT

  • A seated lab test of attention, not a climbing test. Nobody measured a send.
  • The caffeine arm is reported because the study measured it. Caffeine is not part of the KetoneAid protocol.
  • Values are the group means reported in Table 1.

PROTOCOL

  • 11 male team-sport athletes.
  • Intermittent shuttle running to exhaustion.
  • Carbohydrate alone vs carbohydrate plus the ketone ester, at 750 mg of ketone ester per kg of body weight.

WHAT HAPPENED

  • Increase in multitasking errors late in the test: +1.8 on carbohydrate alone, +0.0 with the ester.
  • No difference in reaction time, sprint times or total run time.

WHY IT MATTERS

  • The closest published analog to a long session: repeated hard efforts, with decisions to make while tired.
  • The brain kept doing the complex task. Sprint and run times didn’t change.

CONTEXT

  • Shuttle running, not climbing. Team-sport athletes, not climbers.
  • Nothing measured on the wall.
