KETOSIS + FASTING

“Ketosis” without
the wait.

Your liver makes D-BHB when food stops coming. Veech Ketone Ester delivers the same molecule directly, and most efficiently.

No ketogenic diet, no three-day fast, no adaptation period. Blood D-BHB starts climbing 15–20 minutes after you drink it.

Why the quotation marks: raising circulating D-BHB is commonly sold as “getting into ketosis”, and technically your ketone levels do rise. But it isn't the metabolic state a fast produces. We explain the difference below rather than blur it.

Reaching for fuel between meals
TWO ROADS TO THE SAME MOLECULE

You can wait for ketones.
Or you can drink them.

D-BHB is D-BHB — your cells burn the same molecule either way. What differs is everything around it. A fast produces ketones by running you low on everything else: insulin down, glucose down, fat coming out of storage. VKE produces the ketones without any of that. Same fuel, different metabolic state, which is why we put “ketosis” in quotation marks.

ENDOGENOUS Make it yourself
  • Fast, or cut carbs hard
  • Wait: hours to days
  • Adaptation period first
  • Runs on stored fat
  • Ends when you eat carbs again
EXOGENOUS — VKE Drink it
  • No diet change needed
  • D-BHB rises in 15–20 min
  • No adaptation period
  • From the drink, not stored fat
  • Wears off over a few hours

In one human study, a ketone ester drink raised blood D-BHB from 0.2 mM to 3.3 mM within 60 minutes. Endogenous ketosis typically takes many hours to build and varies substantially between people.

WHAT THE HUMAN RESEARCH FOUND

Ketones take the edge off hunger.

Three separate human trials have now measured what happens to appetite when blood ketones rise. All three point the same way — and all three land on ghrelin, the hormone your stomach releases to tell your brain it's time to eat.

HUNGER HORMONE

A ketone ester drink lowered ghrelin and reported hunger.

GHRELIN ↓PLUS LOWER HUNGER AND DESIRE TO EAT

Compared against an isocaloric dextrose drink matched for volume, taste and colour — so the effect wasn't just the calories.

APPETITE

Acute ketosis inhibited appetite and lowered acyl ghrelin.

APPETITE ↓INDEPENDENT REPLICATION

A separate group, a separate protocol, the same direction of effect. Isocaloric glucose lowered ghrelin too at first — the difference was that it rebounded, and the ketone effect held.

MECHANISM

The monoester raised LEAP2, the body's own ghrelin blocker.

LEAP2 ↑ENDOGENOUS GHRELIN-RECEPTOR ANTAGONIST

Appetite fell alongside it — a plausible route for how ketones quiet hunger signalling.

Worth saying plainly: the authors of the first of those trials concluded that ketone supplements should not be used to replace dietary strategies for weight control. We agree. This is about comfort inside a plan you've already chosen, not a shortcut around one.

WHAT'S ACTUALLY HAPPENING

Your body reads D-BHB
as “fuel is here”.

Ketones aren't only a fuel. They're also a signal. When blood D-BHB is high, your body reads that as evidence there's energy available and eases off the machinery it uses to find more.

DRINK VKE D-BHB ↑ FUEL SIGNAL

That's the trade. For a few hours, plentiful circulating D-BHB reduces the drive to pull fatty acids out of storage and make more ketones in the liver — because the body no longer needs to. Free fatty acids fall in the human studies.

It's a pause, not a permanent switch. As D-BHB clears over the following hours, your own production resumes.

WHAT IT REPLACES, AND WHAT IT DOESN'T

VKE makes fasting easier.
It doesn't make it unnecessary.

WHAT VKE GIVES YOU

The ketones, on demand

D-BHB climbing within 15–20 minutes and peaking inside the hour — without changing what you eat, and without an adaptation period.

WHAT VKE GIVES YOU

A softer hunger signal

Lower ghrelin and lower reported hunger in three human trials — measured against an isocaloric comparator, so it isn't simply the calories talking.

WHAT IT DOESN'T

A caloric deficit

VKE has calories. Whatever a deficit was doing for you, drinking VKE doesn't do it. If that was the point of the fast, the fast is still the thing.

WHAT IT DOESN'T

Fat mobilisation

A true fast runs on your own stored fat. VKE runs on what's in the bottle, and briefly reduces the signal to pull fat out of storage while it's circulating.

WHAT IT DOESN'T

Cellular housekeeping

Going without food can activate autophagy — the cellular recycling process involved in breaking down damaged proteins and worn-out components. That fasting response reflects the broader nutrient-deprived state, not simply the presence of ketones. VKE has not been shown in humans to reproduce the autophagy response of fasting, so if autophagy is the reason you're fasting, don't treat elevated D-BHB from a bottle as equivalent to the fast itself. D-BHB does have its own signalling effects, including autophagy-related effects in laboratory research, but that is a different claim.

WHERE IT ACTUALLY EARNS ITS PLACE

Bridging the gaps.

01

Stretching the gap between meals

Energy and a quieter appetite when the next meal is a long way off.

02

Switching to a lower-carb diet

The first days of a metabolic change are the roughest. This is where people report the biggest difference.

03

Fasted work or training

Fuel for the session without the food volume you were avoiding.

04

Ketosis without the diet

When you want D-BHB available but have no intention of eating keto.

PROTOCOL  University of Oxford. Fifteen participants of normal weight, after an overnight fast, drank either a ketone ester or an isocaloric dextrose drink — matched for volume, taste, tonicity and colour. Blood was analysed for D-BHB, glucose, insulin, ghrelin, GLP-1 and PYY, with hunger, fullness and desire to eat scored on visual analogue scales.

WHAT HAPPENED

  • Blood D-BHB rose from 0.2 mM to 3.3 mM within 60 minutes.
  • Ghrelin, insulin, GLP-1 and PYY were all significantly lower 2 to 4 hours after the ester than after dextrose.
  • Reported hunger and desire to eat were significantly suppressed at 1.5 hours.

WHY IT MATTERS

  • The comparator was isocaloric, so the appetite effect can't be explained by calories alone.
  • It isolates the effect of the ketones themselves, without any dietary change.

CONTEXT: Fifteen participants, single occasion, acute measurement. The authors were explicit that until chronic effects are characterised, ketone supplements should not be used to replace dietary strategies for weight control. Obesity, 2018;26(2):269–273. PMID 29105987 — PubMed

PROTOCOL  Ten healthy young men on three separate occasions in a placebo-controlled crossover: a ketone ester, a taste-matched isovolumetric and isocaloric 50% glucose drink, or a taste-matched placebo. Peak D-BHB averaged 5.5 mM in the ketone-ester condition.

WHAT HAPPENED

  • Acute ketosis inhibited appetite.
  • Acyl and unacylated ghrelin fell about 25% after both the ketone ester and the isocaloric glucose drink.
  • Acyl ghrelin stayed low with the ketone ester, but returned to placebo levels after glucose.
  • GLP-1, GIP, gastrin and cholecystokinin were unaffected by the ester.

WHY IT MATTERS

  • A different group, a different protocol, the same direction of effect. Replication is what separates a finding from a fluke.
  • The authors concluded the appetite effect was more likely mediated through ghrelin than through GLP-1, GIP, gastrin or cholecystokinin.

CONTEXT: Ten healthy young men, acute measurement. Worth reading precisely: glucose lowered ghrelin initially too. What separated the ketone ester was that its effect persisted rather than rebounding. Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, 2021;23(8):1834–1842. PMID 33852195 — PubMed

PROTOCOL  Healthy men given a ketone monoester, with circulating LEAP2 and appetite measured. LEAP2 is an endogenous antagonist of the ghrelin receptor — the body's own brake on the hunger signal.

WHAT HAPPENED

  • The ketone monoester increased circulating LEAP2.
  • Appetite decreased.

WHY IT MATTERS

  • It offers a plausible route for the appetite effect the other two trials measured, rather than leaving it unexplained.

CONTEXT: Healthy men, acute measurement. This identifies an associated mechanism; it does not establish that LEAP2 is the sole route. PMID 36867127 — PubMed

Pharmacokinetics: how high D-BHB goes, and what food does to it.

PROTOCOL  Human pharmacokinetic work on exogenous ketones, comparing the ester against ketone salts and testing the effect of food on the response.

WHAT HAPPENED

  • Food lowered peak D-BHB by about 33% — 3.3 mM fasted against 2.2 mM fed, in 16 participants.
  • At a matched dose, the ester reached 2.8 mM against 1.0 mM for ketone salts.

WHY IT MATTERS

  • If you want the strongest ketone response, an empty stomach is the condition to take it under — which suits this use case.
  • Not every ketone product produces the same blood levels.

CONTEXT: Healthy participants under controlled conditions. PMID 29163194 — PubMed

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ACTUALLY ASK

Ketosis, fasting
and ketone ester

Veech Ketone Ester is a food. Nothing on this page is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease, and nothing here is medical advice. VKE is not a weight-loss product and is not a substitute for adequate nutrition. Research findings described here are measured outcomes from controlled trials, not expected results for any individual. Our Veech Ketone Ester molecule is manufactured in the United States.

Does VKE break a fast?

Technically yes, a little.

VKE is a food and it has calories, so a strict caloric fast is broken. It is a fraction of the calories in a meal or a snack, but it isn't zero.

What matters is what you were fasting for. If it was to raise ketones, VKE gets you there much faster — producing fasting-range D-BHB within about an hour. If it was to create a caloric deficit, VKE doesn't do that, and it isn't a weight-loss product.

Most people using it this way aren't running a clinical protocol. They're stretching the gap between meals, staying sharp through a long morning, or getting through the first rough days of a diet change without falling over.

Do I need to eat keto for VKE to work?

No. That's the whole point of an ester.

A ketogenic diet works by removing carbohydrate until your liver starts making ketones. VKE skips that step and delivers D-BHB directly, whatever you ate today.

Food does blunt the response — a meal lowered peak D-BHB by about 33% in human testing — so take it away from meals if you want the strongest rise.

Does taking VKE stop my body making its own ketones?

It can temporarily, for a few hours.

Your body reads high circulating D-BHB as a sign that fuel is available, so the drive to pull fatty acids out of storage and produce more ketones in the liver eases off. Free fatty acids fall in the human studies.

That's temporary. As the D-BHB clears over the following hours, your own production picks back up. It's a pause, not a switch that stays off.

Will VKE help with hunger?

Three human trials say it takes the edge off.

A ketone ester drink lowered ghrelin, reported hunger and desire to eat compared with an isocaloric dextrose drink. A separate group found acute ketosis inhibited appetite and lowered acyl ghrelin. A third found the monoester raised LEAP2, the body's own ghrelin blocker, with appetite falling alongside it.

That's comfort inside a plan you've already chosen. It isn't a weight-loss product, and the authors of the first trial said plainly that ketone supplements shouldn't replace dietary strategies for weight control.

Is exogenous ketosis the same as being in ketosis from fasting?

The molecule is identical. The metabolic context isn't.

Fasting ketosis comes with an empty stomach, low insulin and fat being pulled out of storage to make the ketones. Exogenous ketosis gives you the D-BHB without any of that.

So if you want the ketones, they're the same ketones. If you wanted the deficit and the fat mobilisation, those come from the fast, not from the bottle.

Can VKE help with the switch to a low-carb diet?

This is one of the most common reasons people reach for it.

The first days of cutting carbohydrate hard are the worst part — your body is between fuel systems, not yet good at running on either. VKE puts D-BHB in circulation while your own machinery catches up.

To be straight with you: nobody has run the trial that measures how people feel during that transition with and without VKE. What we have is the mechanism and a lot of customers who use it exactly this way.

When should I take it?

Away from meals, on a relatively empty stomach — that's when the ketone rise is highest and when the gap you're bridging usually is.

SEE VKE PROTOCOLS

Which KetoneAid format should I choose?

All three are the same Veech Ketone Ester at different dilutions, so the choice is about concentration, taste and how you want to dose.

Ke4 is 50% and carries 30g per bottle — the most ester in the fewest bottles, and the most potent taste. Ke2 is 25% with 25g per bottle: three times the water of Ke4 at the same cost per gram, and easier to get down. The Ketone Shot is 8% with 5g per bottle, ready to drink with nothing to measure.

For bridging a gap between meals, the Shot is the easiest place to start.
