Ketone product comparison

They Can All Raise
Blood Ketones, But...Different Ketones,
Different Results.

Ketone products are often discussed as though a rise in BHB makes them interchangeable. It does not. Different molecules have different pharmacokinetics, different research and different results. Before you compare brands, compare what is actually inside the bottle.

Master table

Which ketone product are you actually buying?

Five common ketone approaches. The molecule is identified in each column header; the table focuses on what matters most — BHB delivery, whether Veech Ketone Ester (VKE) research applies, direct human evidence and formulation baggage.

Some rows use matched 10g human data. Others use approximate cross-study comparisons where a direct head-to-head does not exist yet.

* Matched 10g head-to-head: adjusted rise over baseline in the same participants was approximately +1.7 mM for Veech Ketone Ester (VKE), +1.2 mM for Kenetik, and +0.8 mM for Ketone-IQ.1

† Other BHB-delivery comparisons: the C8 ketone diester is an approximate cross-study per-gram estimate rather than a matched head-to-head with VKE. The BHB-salt comparison comes from controlled human pharmacokinetic work in which ketone salts produced a substantially lower D-BHB peak than VKE.3,4

No* means we did not identify a repeated, independent positive controlled-human evidence base for that exact molecule and outcome. Ketone-IQ does have one HVMN-funded 2025 paper reporting improved repeated-sprint metrics; the 5K was unchanged, HVMN funded the study, and a Ketone-IQ employee was a co-author.11,12,13

Quick takeaway

The short answer.

If the question is which product has direct positive evidence for Focus, Energy and Recovery and also has the strongest, most efficient BHB delivery, the answer is Veech Ketone Ester.5,6,7,8

It is the moleculeThe Veech Ketone Ester is the actual molecule behind most of the published human ketone-ester research you hear about.2,27
It raises BHB betterMatched-dose human testing shows VKE produces roughly twice the BHB rise of Ketone-IQ at the same 10g active dose, while broader pharmacokinetic research shows still larger gaps versus lower-yield formats such as salts and MCTs.1,3,24
It has direct outcomesControlled human studies using the Veech Ketone Ester have reported positive performance, cognition, training-adaptation and recovery outcomes under multiple protocols.5,6,7,8,9
The others are differentR 1,3 butanediol, D-BHB Free Acid + R 1,3 butanediol, BHB salts and other non-VKE esters are different molecules with different research and different results.1,2,3,4
75+ Veech research base

Researchers keep choosing the same molecule. VKE reliably produces substantial D-BHB exposure and has the deepest established pharmacokinetic and human-outcome record in the category, by far.27

vs Ketone-IQ at matched 10g

In direct human testing, equal 10g active doses produced roughly twice the BHB rise with VKE versus Ketone-IQ. It’s not just about raising BHB — it’s about how fast and efficiently you get there.1

KetoneAid

KetoneAid sells the Veech Ketone Ester — the exact molecule behind most of the published human ketone research people are usually talking about when they cite exciting ketone performance, cognition and recovery results.2,5,6,7,8,27

Ketone-IQ

Ketone-IQ is based on R 1,3 butanediol. It is better described as a ketone precursor. It can raise blood ketones, but it is not the Veech Ketone Ester and does not inherit the VKE performance or cognition results often cited in its marketing.1,10

Different molecule
Actual ketone: R 1,3 butanediol Identity: precursor Direct positive outcomes: no identified positive controlled human performance or cognition study

The key distinctions

Raising BHB does not make Ketone-IQ equivalent to VKE. The molecule is different, the pharmacokinetics are different, and the broader performance record is different. R 1,3 butanediol is also an alcohol-like diol capable of producing a buzz at higher exposure — which is exactly why Hard Ketones uses the molecule as an alcohol-alternative ingredient.1,12,13,14,25

✕ not VKE ✕ cannot use Veech results as its own ✕ no repeated independent positive performance record

We know about the positive Ketone-IQ paper11,12,13

One HVMN-funded study reported better repeated-sprint metrics.

We are not hiding it. We’re calling it out. The 2025 study reported higher average and peak power across five 10-second cycling sprints and less fatigue. It did not improve the 5K. HVMN — Ketone-IQ’s parent company — funded the study, and Latt Mansor of Ketone-IQ was a co-author. Other direct Ketone-IQ endurance work has reported no significant benefit.

That is why our comparison asks about repeated, independent evidence — not whether one favorable endpoint exists somewhere.

Same molecule. Very different marketing.

Ketone-IQ’s “performance ketone” is
our alcohol-alternative Buzz ingredient.

Same core molecule: R 1,3 butanediol. Hard Ketones uses it under the tradename Ketohol® as a Real Buzz. No Booze.™ alcohol-alternative beverage ingredient to relax and unwind. Ketone-IQ sells R 1,3 butanediol for focus and performance — while heavily citing research performed with the Veech Ketone Ester.10,25

Kenetik

Kenetik combines D-BHB Free Acid with R 1,3 butanediol. Those are two separate molecules in the same drink. Mixing them does not create the ester bond and does not recreate the Veech Ketone Ester or its effects.1,15

Mixture, not ester
Actual ketone: D-BHB Free Acid + R 1,3 butanediol Identity: two separate molecules Direct positive outcomes: no identified positive controlled human performance or cognition study

The bond IS the engineering.

The Veech Ketone Ester is one covalent molecule: D-BHB chemically bonded to the precursor that generates additional D-BHB downstream. That gives the molecule fixed stoichiometry, controlled hydrolysis and coordinated release.2

Kenetik puts free D-BHB + free R 1,3 butanediol into the same bottle. Same component names. Not the same molecule. In matched human testing, the bonded monoester produced substantially greater BHB delivery at the same 10g active dose. Kenetik has not demonstrated VKE’s established focus and performance outcomes in controlled human studies of its own formulation, yet Kenetik cites VKE studies in its marketing.1,15

The bond is what makes it the Veech Ketone Ester.
Take away the bond and you don’t have a cheaper VKE. You have two separate molecules with different pharmacokinetics and effects — and you cannot assume they reproduce VKE’s positive outcomes.2

✕ no ester bond ✕ different molecule ✕ cannot claim VKE outcomes

BHB Salts can make a ketone meter move, but…

The most common — and cheapest — exogenous ketone category. Prüvit, Perfect Keto, goBHB salt products and dozens more are BHB salt products. We rarely spend much time on salts because, compared with the Veech Ketone Ester, they are not remotely in the same tier for ketone delivery or direct human performance evidence.19,20

Old-school ketone salts
1

Weak BHB delivery.

In direct human pharmacokinetic work, ketone ester produced a D-BHB peak of about 2.8 mM versus about 1.0 mM from ketone salts at the study doses.3,24

2

Racemic baggage.

Traditional racemic BHB salts can be roughly half L-BHB. In the foundational human comparison, the salt drink contained 50% L-BHB, which remained elevated in blood for more than 8 hours. D-BHB is the primary endogenous energetic isoform.3,23

3

You have to carry the BHB with minerals.

That means sodium, calcium, magnesium and/or potassium come along for the ride. Prüvit explicitly says its BHB is mineral-bound and uses a higher proportion of sodium. Perfect Keto has described a serving with roughly 680mg sodium + 590mg calcium + 320mg magnesium.19,20

4

GI baggage is real.

A controlled study of sodium/calcium D/L-BHB salts reported GI problems in three participants in total, including one who withdrew. More mineral load is not elegant ketone delivery.18

5

And the performance record?

One controlled cycling study found average time-trial power was about 7% lower after ketone salts versus placebo. Another controlled study found no cognitive improvement despite raising BHB.16,17

6

FYI: now they’re selling L-BHB for “fast-acting” energy.

goBHB now sells an L-BHB Energy Shot for “fast-acting” energy and focus. That’s quite a pivot: goBHB’s own earlier guidance said L-BHB is metabolized slowly and that D-BHB may be superior for energy performance. Now the slow-metabolized isomer is suddenly their fast-acting energy product. Human evidence is still thin. Persistence is not performance.21,22,23

Bottom line

Half the molecule may be the wrong isoform. The delivery is weak. The mineral load is high. The performance evidence is unimpressive.3,16,17,18,23

Yes, BHB salts can make a blood-ketone meter move. That is a very low bar.

Actual ketone: mineral-bound BHB Common format: racemic D/L-BHB Extra baggage: sodium / calcium / magnesium / potassium
✕ not VKE ✕ weak BHB delivery ✕ mineral load ✕ no compelling replicated performance record

How to compare ketone products properly

Compare the molecule first. Then compare the evidence.

This is the evaluation framework the rest of the KetoneAid science section is designed to support.

Step 1

What is the actual ketone?

Is it VKE, R 1,3 butanediol, D-BHB Free Acid, a blend, BHB salts, or some other non-Veech ester?

Step 2

BHB Delivery Efficiency

How much D-BHB does the molecule actually deliver at a comparable dose? It’s not just about whether blood ketones rise. It’s about how efficiently you get there.1,3,4,24

Step 3

Human Outcomes & Efficacy

What happened when performance, cognition and recovery were actually measured? Those outcomes do not automatically follow from a higher ketone reading. Consider the method that produced the result.5,6,7,8

Step 4

Does the cited study match the bottle?

If the paper studied the Veech Ketone Ester, the result belongs to the Veech Ketone Ester. Full stop.2

Frequently asked

About the comparison.

Why use green checks and red Xs instead of long evidence labels?

Because the goal is clarity. Green checks and red Xs make the differences obvious at a glance; the asterisk carries the nuance where the evidence question needs it.

Does “No*” mean the product cannot raise ketones?

No. The red Xs in the evidence rows do not mean the product cannot raise BHB. “No*” means we did not identify a repeated independent positive controlled-human evidence base for that exact molecule and outcome.11,12,13,16,17,26

Why not just compare all ketone products by peak BHB?

Because a ketone meter reading is just an easily measured snapshot describing exposure, not the whole pharmacokinetic story. See Veech Ketone Ester Science for more. That reading is not an indication of the outcomes most people care about — performance, cognition, recovery and training adaptation. Those must be measured directly.1,3,4,24

Why is Kenetik not treated the same as the Veech Ketone Ester if it contains D-BHB and R 1,3 butanediol?

Because those are still two separate molecules in a mixture. The Veech Ketone Ester is a single bonded molecule. The bond is key. Mixing the components in a drink does not recreate the ester or its evidence base.1,2,15
