TRAINING RECOVERY + ADAPTATION

Train hard.
Come back better.

Veech Ketone Ester has been studied across hard training blocks — not just before a single workout.

Human research has shown greater endurance adaptations, higher late-session power and stronger capillary responses when VKE was used during demanding training.

The goal isn't just to survive today's session. It's to get more from the training that follows.

One workout is a stimulus.
Weeks of them change you.

The strongest VKE training results didn't come from a one-off dose. They came when athletes used VKE repeatedly through demanding training blocks.

HOW THE PROS USE IT

At the Tour, recovery is part of the race.

Stage racing makes the logic obvious: perform today, recover, and be ready to do it again tomorrow. KetoneAid's professional cycling partners use Veech Ketone Ester as part of that recovery process.

Eight weeks: VKE enhanced endurance-training adaptations.

Robberechts et al. 2026 · Journal of Physiology
28 trained males · eight-week training study

VIEW STUDY DETAILS +

PROTOCOL  KU Leuven. Twenty-eight trained males completed eight weeks of supervised cycling. Fourteen received 25g of the ketone monoester (VKE) immediately after each session and again before sleep; fourteen received an isocaloric placebo. Performance and muscular and cardiac adaptations were measured at baseline, week 3, week 7 and after a taper week.

WHAT HAPPENED

  • Relative VO2peak improved 12% from baseline with VKE versus 6% in control — an additional 6% beyond training alone.
  • 30-minute time-trial performance was 4% higher with VKE: 302 ± 28 W versus 291 ± 27 W.
  • Peak power showed an additional 4% gain beyond training alone.
  • Mitochondrial and endurance adaptations were stronger with VKE.

WHY IT MATTERS

  • This is repeated-training evidence, not simply an acute pre-workout test.
  • VKE was taken after training and before sleep — positioned around recovery rather than performance.
  • Eight weeks with a periodised programme is closer to how people actually train.

CONTEXT: Trained males only, 14 per group, and a supervised laboratory programme rather than self-directed training. The percentages above are the additional gain beyond what training alone produced, as described in the paper's discussion. Journal of Physiology, doi 10.1113/JP290315. PMID 41757674 — PubMed

Three-week overload block: VKE helped athletes sustain more training output and late-session power.

Poffé et al. 2019 · Journal of Physiology
18 fit males · 3 weeks, 6 days/week, two sessions per day

VIEW STUDY DETAILS +

PROTOCOL  KU Leuven. Eighteen fit male subjects completed three weeks of deliberately excessive cycling — six days a week, two sessions daily — designed to induce non-functional overreaching. Nine received a ketone ester drink after each session and before sleep; nine received a control drink.

WHAT HAPPENED

  • Power output in the final 30 minutes of a 2-hour standardized endurance session was 15% higher with VKE.
  • Sustainable training load in week 3 was also 15% higher with VKE.
  • The training-induced rise in nocturnal adrenaline and noradrenaline was inhibited with VKE.
  • Energy balance turned negative in the control group but not with VKE.

WHY IT MATTERS

  • The 15% was measured late in a long session, which is where training quality usually collapses.
  • Being able to absorb more training load is the input to adaptation.
  • The control group developed the classic markers of overreaching. The VKE group largely didn't.

CONTEXT: Nine per group, fit males, and a training load deliberately built to cause overreaching — not a normal programme. The 15% figure is specific to that protocol and that measurement point; it is not a universal improvement from a single dose. Part of the effect may relate to the difference in energy balance between groups. PMID 31039280 — PubMed

Overload training: VKE amplified capillary adaptation.

Poffé et al. 2023 · Journal of Physiology
18 fit males · 3-week overload, 10 sessions/week

VIEW STUDY DETAILS +

PROTOCOL  KU Leuven. Eighteen healthy, fit male volunteers completed a three-week endurance training overload programme of ten sessions per week. Nine received 25g of a ketone ester immediately after each session and 30 minutes before sleep; nine received an isocaloric control drink. Muscle biopsies from the vastus lateralis were taken before and after.

WHAT HAPPENED

  • Capillary contacts increased 44% in the VKE group, and not in the control group.
  • The capillary-to-fibre perimeter exchange index increased 42% in the VKE group.
  • Serum EPO rose about 25% with VKE and was unchanged in the control group.
  • Pro-angiogenic factors VEGF and eNOS also increased in muscle.

WHY IT MATTERS

  • Capillaries are the delivery network. More capillary contact per fibre means shorter distances for oxygen and nutrients to travel into working muscle.
  • Building new capillaries is one of the primary adaptations endurance training is meant to produce — and heavy overload normally blunts it.
  • This is a structural change in the muscle, not a same-day performance effect.

CONTEXT: Nine per group, fit males, three weeks of deliberate overload. These are measures of muscle capillarisation and circulating EPO, not clinical or cardiovascular outcomes. Fibre type composition and cross-sectional area were unchanged. PMID 37062892 — PubMed

Post-exercise recovery: VKE increased glucose uptake and muscle glycogen.

Holdsworth et al. 2017 · MSSE
University of Oxford · hyperglycemic clamp

VIEW STUDY DETAILS +

PROTOCOL  After glycogen-depleting exercise, participants received a ketone ester drink or control alongside a controlled high-glucose recovery condition — a hyperglycemic clamp holding blood glucose at 10 mM.

WHAT HAPPENED

  • Muscle glycogen was about 50% higher with VKE: 246 versus 164 mmol per kg dry weight.
  • Glucose uptake was 32% greater with VKE.
  • Endogenous insulin levels roughly doubled.

WHY IT MATTERS

  • Glycogen is the fuel the next hard session runs on. Refilling it faster is the practical job of recovery nutrition.
  • The effect was accompanied by higher insulin and greater glucose uptake — not simply more carbohydrate in the drink.

CONTEXT: The clamp held blood glucose at a supraphysiological 10 mM, which is material — this tested VKE alongside plentiful glucose, not VKE on its own. PMID 28398950 — PubMed

Post-exercise recovery: VKE increased mTORC1 signaling.

Vandoorne et al. 2017 · Frontiers in Physiology
KU Leuven · VKE added to carbohydrate + protein

VIEW STUDY DETAILS +

PROTOCOL  Young healthy volunteers exercised, then took a standard post-exercise recovery beverage containing carbohydrate and protein, with or without a ketone ester added. Muscle biopsies assessed signaling pathways.

WHAT HAPPENED

  • mTORC1 activation was higher with VKE, shown by greater phosphorylation of its downstream targets S6K1 and 4E-BP1.
  • Post-exercise AMPK phosphorylation fell more rapidly with VKE.

WHY IT MATTERS

  • mTORC1 is a central pathway in muscle remodeling after training.
  • The signal appeared on top of a recovery drink that already contained carbohydrate and protein.

CONTEXT: VKE did not further increase glycogen resynthesis in this protocol. The authors specifically contrasted this result with Holdsworth: Holdsworth maintained blood glucose at 10 mM with a hyperglycemic clamp, where VKE increased insulin and glucose uptake. Here, participants were already receiving high-rate carbohydrate + protein intended to maximize post-exercise recovery, and insulin was similar with VKE and placebo. The protocols were testing materially different recovery conditions. PMID 28588499 — PubMed

After a hard training day: VKE improved sleep efficiency and counteracted the REM decline.

Robberechts et al. 2023 · MSSE
10 trained cyclists · morning endurance + evening HIIT

VIEW STUDY DETAILS +

PROTOCOL  Ten well-trained cyclists completed morning endurance training followed by high-intensity intervals finishing one hour before sleep. They received 25g of VKE post-exercise and again 30 minutes before bed, or placebo. Sleep was measured by polysomnography.

WHAT HAPPENED

  • The training day alone reduced REM sleep by 26% and increased wakefulness after sleep onset by 95%.
  • VKE improved sleep efficiency by 3%.
  • VKE counteracted both the REM decline and the increase in wakefulness.

WHY IT MATTERS

  • Hard evening training is one of the most reliable ways to wreck a night's sleep.
  • Sleep is when much of the adaptation to training gets consolidated.

CONTEXT: Ten trained cyclists, and a deliberately disruptive training day rather than normal sleep. This is about protecting sleep after hard exercise. VKE is a food, not a sleep aid. PMID 37259248 — PubMed

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ACTUALLY ASK

Recovery, adaptation
and ketone ester

Veech Ketone Ester is a food, not a drug or a dietary supplement. Nothing on this page is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease, and nothing here is medical advice. The capillary and EPO findings described are measures of skeletal muscle adaptation and circulating hormone concentration, not cardiovascular or clinical outcomes. Our Veech Ketone Ester molecule is manufactured in the United States.

Is recovery the same as adaptation?

No.

Recovery gets you back toward baseline. Adaptation is what raises the baseline.

The VKE training literature includes both acute and repeated-training experiments, and some of the strongest results appear when researchers followed athletes across weeks of demanding training.

Should I take VKE before or after training?

Both — and during, too.

For hard training, our recommended protocol can use VKE before the session, during longer or more demanding work, after training, and again before bed when recovery and adaptation are the goal.

BEFORE

Fuel available as the work starts.

DURING

Useful for longer or harder sessions.

AFTER

Transition from training into recovery.

BEFORE BED

Support the overnight recovery and adaptation window.

Those timing points do different jobs: fuel the work, support the later stages of the session, start recovery afterward, and support the overnight recovery window.

The exact amount depends on the session, duration, intensity and your own response. Think beyond a single dose — the protocol follows the work.

SEE VKE PROTOCOLS

Does VKE replace carbohydrates or protein after training?

No.

Protein, carbohydrate and VKE do different jobs.

VKE is another fuel and signaling molecule. It does not provide amino acids and does not replace adequate nutrition.

Can I use VKE every day during a training block?

Yes. Repeated VKE use has been studied across multi-week human training protocols.

If you're in a serious training block, consistency matters because the training itself is repeated. Your VKE protocol can follow that work across the block.

SEE VKE PROTOCOLS

Which KetoneAid format should I choose?

All three are the same Veech Ketone Ester at different dilutions, so the choice is about concentration, taste and how you want to dose.

Ke4 is 50% and carries 30g per bottle — the most ester in the fewest bottles, and the most potent taste. Ke2 is 25% with 25g per bottle: three times the water of Ke4 at the same cost per gram, and easier to get down. The Ketone Shot is 8% with 5g per bottle, ready to drink with nothing to measure.

The research protocols used larger study doses than many customers use day to day. Choose the format and amount that fits your protocol.
